The WebRing directory contains a listing of rings by Category and subcategory. You can use this directory to browse for rings of interest, or for rings you may wish to join.
Public rings with three (3) or more active, PASSing, sites AND a Navigation rating of at least 33% are included in the directory. New rings, those less than 4 weeks old, are also listed even if they have fewer than 3 sites. This is intended to give newer rings some exposure so they can more easily grow to have at least four sites and therefore be listed permanently.
Some of the items you'll see on a directory page, and their meaning, are listed below:
Search Text Box
Use the search tool to search the entire system for rings using a few search keywords. Sometimes this can be a faster way to find a specific ring or topic.
Category Statistics
The Category "crumb" (The hyperlink directory path just under the category name bar) contains the total traffic for the category and all subcategories. This traffic value represents all CGI hits the rings within the category have received over the past 8 weeks. Limiting the statistics to the prior eight weeks allows for a reasonable amount of history, but current enough to reflect recent interest trends as well.
Each true subdirectory in the list, if the category has any subdirectories, shows the total number of rings and traffic for the subcategory. Again, the traffic numbers are for the previous 8 week period.
Sort Order Controls
Between the subdirectory list and the listing of any rings within the category you will see a tool bar that you an use to re-order the ring list. The default display is in ascending alphabetical order. The other options are:
- Alphabetical in descending order
- Creation Date in ascending order. This shows newer rings first.
- Creation Date in descending order. This shows the oldest rings first.
- Ascending Size. rings with the fewest active sites are listed first.
- Descending Size. rings with the most active sites are listed first.
- Ascending traffic. rings with the least amount of traffic (over the prior 8 weeks) are shown first.
- Descending traffic. The most popular rings over the prior 8 weeks are shown first.
Ring List
The bottom portion of the page contains a list of rings, sorted as above, for that category, with next (and prior) page links if there are more than can fit on a page. The listing contains a link to the ring's "hub" page and includes title, description, and size and traffic figures. In addition, on the left-hand side there is a navigation rating index. This value ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the best. A rating of at least 90 indicates the ring should be very easy to navigate (that is, move from site to site easily), over 80 moderately easy, and anything below 70 is probably hard to navigate and perhaps poorly managed ring.
